I hope you don't mine me commenting but I wanted to put my 2 cents in.
I live in akabane and I personally like it alot. My apartment is much larger and nicer than one I would get for the same rent in "central tokyo" as well as it is 4 minutes from the JR station and about 10 from the Tokyo metro station. There is alot to do in very short walking distance, tons of shops and resturants, much more than where I used to live which was in Minato-ku. Most people don't live in central tokyo anyway so besides the major nightlife spots it's pretty dead. Alot of people do say its "too far from the center" but I can get to most of the major city centers in less than 25 mins and without switching several trains, when I lived in Minato-ku and was looking at apartments in central tokyo, I would have to change trains several times and it would often take around a half hour or more to get some places. Shinjuku in only 15 mins, from my old apartment shinjuku was 20 mins and 100 yen more and 1 transfer. I personally think akabane (and some of the other "outer cities")are some of the best kept secrets of tokyo because it's lively, convienent and a little cheaper than "central" tokyo.
